The Problem: A New Executive Role, Nothing Fit, and A Client Not Feeling The Part

As a wardrobe stylist for executive women, I recently worked with a client who was 50, in menopause, and had just been promoted to VP. She should have been celebrating. Instead, she was standing in front of a closet where nothing fit, exactly when she needed to look the part of her new executive role.

Her body had changed, her title had changed, and her wardrobe hadn’t caught up with either. That combination is incredibly common, and it’s fixable.

She didn’t have much time to shop. She needed the process of finding clothes for her new body and new role to be easy and painless, and to leave her feeling like she commanded the room.

The Process: How We Built an Executive Wardrobe for Her New Body and Role

What are the biggest dressing mistakes women make with a menopause belly?

The two biggest mistakes are hiding under shapeless tops and squeezing into your old size. When my client came to me, she’d been doing both. Oversized fabric adds volume, and a waistband that cuts in creates the very bulge she was trying to hide.

Step 1: The closet edit (1.5 hours)

As a wardrobe stylist, the first thing I tell clients is that we need to take a step back. We went through her closet together. Most of the pieces no longer worked, but the exercise was still valuable. I could tell from her body language which pieces she loved, which ones made her feel confident and powerful, and which parts of her body she liked to highlight.

I photographed everything we kept, including shoes and jewelry, so we could build the new pieces around them. The closet edit took 1.5 hours.

Step 2: Shopping for the body she now has (2 hours)

Before our shopping trip, I pulled clothes at a few stores. By then, my client was ready to buy for the body she has now, not the one she had before menopause. Everything I pulled had structure.

What should you wear with a menopause belly?

Wear structure and drape, in one color from top to bottom. For her new VP role, we built an executive wardrobe around long, unbuttoned blazers over a top in the same color as her trousers. That unbroken column of color creates a vertical line that draws the eye up and down instead of across. It’s slimming, and it reads as authority, which is exactly what executive presence requires.

What trousers and jeans are most flattering for a fuller tummy?

Mid- to high-rise, flat-front trousers with a wider leg are the most flattering for a fuller tummy. Straight, wide-leg and soft bootcut styles balance the midsection so the proportions look even. For my client, finding trousers with a smooth, flat waistband, with no pleats or front pockets, was a turning point. Once the pants fit, everything else fell into place.

What dress shapes work for a menopause belly?

Wrap dresses work best: the diagonal line slims, the V-neck elongates, and you control the fit. For executive women, a structured shift or A-line sheath dress under a blazer is a polished alternative that skims rather than clings. Skip bodycon dresses and anything belted at the natural waist.

What fabrics are best for a menopause belly?

Choose fabrics with weight and drape: ponte, matte jersey, crepe and wool blends. They glide over the body instead of clinging. Thin, stretchy knits show every line, and that’s the last thing an executive wants to worry about in a board meeting.

Which tops should you avoid with a menopause belly?

Avoid cropped tops and anything that ends right at the widest part of the belly, because that hemline acts like an arrow. I chose tops that hit at the hip or just below, with a V-neck to lift the eye. A loose front tuck defines the waist without exposing it.

Step 3: Filling the gaps online

I photographed every item she bought. A few pieces had to be found online, so I sent her those links afterward. The in-person shopping trip took 2 hours. She told me it would have taken her most of a Saturday on her own, and she would have left empty-handed.

The Result: An Executive Wardrobe That Fit Her Body and Her Title

In 3.5 hours total, my client had an executive wardrobe that fit her body and her title. She also had a lookbook showing her how to build outfits from her new pieces, with notes on everything we discussed. She stopped dreading getting dressed, and she owned the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to work with an executive wardrobe stylist?

For this client, the full process took 3.5 hours: a 1.5-hour closet edit and a 2-hour shopping trip, plus a few online pieces sent afterward. Most women spend far longer shopping on their own and still leave without what they need.

Is shapewear worth it for a menopause belly?

Yes, if it’s comfortable. Light, seamless smoothing shorts give fabric a clean surface to drape over. My rule: if it doesn’t feel good by 3pm, it’s the wrong piece.

What’s included in working with a wardrobe stylist?

A closet edit, a curated shopping trip, and a personal lookbook showing how to wear your new pieces together. You leave with outfits, not just clothes, and your executive prescene will come though. You already have the skills, and experince, but you will now have the polished look to own the room.
