Over the last year I have started to work with more teenage clients, and so far, it has been enjoyable and rewarding. However, there are challenges. Teenagers are still trying to figure out who they are, how to dress their bodies, and love themselves. They also are trying to figure out their own style, and that it is okay to have their own style. I don’t miss being a teen, but I love helping them figure out how to feel more confident and feel good about the way they dress.
Where Do I Shop?
When I work with a teen, I get to know them and figure out who they are. This allows me to guide them in the right direction to find their own style. I also can quickly look at them and figure out which brands will fit THEIR body, but still be cool by teen standards. I also talk with their parents to make sure we are all on the same page.
The stores that I have had the most success shopping with teen clients are:
• Free People
• Madewell
• Bloomingdale’s
• Anthropologie
• Gap
• Nordstrom
• Zara
• Topshop
Are You Wearing The Right Size Bra?
I have noticed that teens, like most women are not wearing the right size bra. This should not be a surprise. If that is something I suspect I always get them sized. I work with a woman at Neiman Marcus named Fern who is makes the process comfortable, and easy for the girls. The minute they are in the right bra, their confidence is boosted. One client told me I changed her life. A good bra can do that.
You Are Not A Size Zero, But ALL Your Friends Are…
Body struggles are real at any age, but teen girls want to wear crop tops and short shorts. It is hard to tell a teen that a crop top is not the right look for them. I have found that Free People is a great place to find tops that have the same feel as a crop top, but flatter the client. Instead of short shorts, I look for dresses, they flatter the client but keep them cool, especially in Atlanta. High rise jeans, or “mom” jeans are another go to.
Finding Your Own Style
This is easy to figure out. Teens are on social media and send me pictures or influencers that they like. Once I see that, I can figure out how to adjust the look to fit the client I am working with. I also will show them items that are along the same line, but a little outside the box. After they have seen a few items they seem more confident in what they like AND feel good about the way they look.
Figuring out your style is hard for anyone, but it for teens it is even harder. If you have a teen in your life that needs a little help, I would love to work with them.
